Who Are We?
The senior PLTW (Project Lead the Way) classes led by the Engineering Design and Development class designed and built
our first Super-Mileage Challenge car during the 2011-2012 school year. This group of young men and women made the
commitment in May of their junior year to meet throughout the summer and then 2-3
hours a week outside of class time to design and build that first prototype.
Their work ethic and leadership played a key role in developing the Central
High School Super Mileage Team. In April
of 2012 Bear Racing competed in the IMSTEA Super Mileage Challenge in
Indianapolis. Even though that attempt
did not produce the results we expected it provided us with a great deal of
experience and multiplied our passion to improve. With the knowledge and experience gained, the
team returned to Evansville and immediately began redesigning a second
generation prototype. This new prototype
competed not only at the IMSTEA Super Mileage Challenge but also in the Shell
Eco Marathon in Houston Texas in April of 2013.
Again with the knowledge and experience gained from another year of
designing, building and competing, the team began planning for 2014.
The Central High School Super Mileage Team is comprised of
students from all grade levels. They work in groups to complete the different
phases of the project. This year they
are grouped into 3 different projects.
These projects develop young men and women who
will be able to use critical thinking skills, problem solving techniques,
mechanical skills, and teamwork later in life.
Where Do We Compete?
We compete in two different competitions one in Indianapolis,IN at the Lucas Oil Speedway. It is sponsored by the IMSTEA or Indiana Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Alliance, and Vincennes University. The other competition we attend is the Shell Eco-Marathon. It has been held in Downtown Houston but starting in 2015 it will be held in Detroit. It is sponsored by Shell, Pennzoil, and Michelin.
